WORKING IN JEFFERSON COUNTY

Jefferson County is the Birmingham metro. Work here means tight infill lots, mature-tree neighborhoods over Red and Shades Mountain, and steady demand on the outlying north and west sides — Gardendale, Fultondale, Warrior, Bessemer, McCalla. Permits, utility locates, and traffic control are part of nearly every metro job.

LOCAL LANDMARKS

LOCAL CULTURE

Birmingham is Alabama's biggest city — Civil Rights history, a nationally-known food scene, Sloss Fest and the Magic City Classic, plus the UAB medical corridor. The suburbs each carry their own identity: Homewood and Mountain Brook feel like old-money villages, Hoover is retail-and-schools, Bessemer and Fultondale are working-class and industrial.
