FORESTRY MULCHING COST PER ACRE
One of the first questions we get is simple: what's it going to cost me per acre? Here's an honest breakdown of what forestry mulching actually runs in West Alabama and east Mississippi, what makes the price move, and how to know you're getting a fair quote before anybody fires up a machine.
TYPICAL PRICE RANGE
$1,500 – $3,500 per acre
That's the honest window for most residential and small-commercial jobs in our service area. Very light underbrush on open, flat, easy-access ground can come in under $1,500. Heavy timber, steep terrain, wet ground, or thick greenbriar and privet can push a job over $3,500. Below is what actually moves the number.
WHAT DRIVES THE PRICE UP OR DOWN
BRUSH & TIMBER DENSITY
Light underbrush and saplings mulch fast. Thick hardwood, greenbriar mats, cedar thickets, and privet slow the head down and burn more fuel and teeth per acre — that's the single biggest cost driver.
TOTAL ACREAGE
Bigger jobs cost less per acre. Mobilizing a mulcher on a trailer is the same whether it's a half acre or ten — spreading that setup over more ground drops the rate. Sub-acre jobs are usually priced as a minimum.
TERRAIN & SLOPE
Flat, dry ground is cheapest. Steep grades, ravines, wet bottoms, and rocky ground all slow production and push the per-acre price higher for safety and equipment wear.
ACCESS & DISTANCE
If we can back the trailer straight to the work, you save. Long drive-ins, gate work, or hauling equipment further from Berry adds to the mobilization line on the quote.
TREE SIZE LIMITS
Standard mulching pricing covers trees up to about 8 inches. Bigger stems, hardwood clusters, or leftover stumps that need grinding below grade are quoted as an add-on or rolled into a higher acre rate.
FINISH LEVEL
Rough mulching (game trails, hunting lanes) is cheapest. A manicured, low-and-level finish for pasture, yard, or building site takes more passes and costs more per acre.

MULCHING VS. TRADITIONAL CLEARING — COST COMPARISON
Traditional land clearing with a dozer typically runs $3,000–$6,000 per acre once you factor in burning, hauling debris off, filling stump holes, and re-grading. Forestry mulching lets you skip most of that: the vegetation stays on site as a protective mulch layer, there's no burn permit hassle, and the ground is usable almost immediately. On thick, mature timber where every stump has to come out, traditional clearing (or a hybrid job) may still be the right call — we'll tell you straight which one fits your land.

What is the average forestry mulching cost per acre?
Most jobs in West Alabama and east Mississippi land between $1,500 and $3,500 per acre. Light underbrush on flat, accessible ground runs toward the low end; heavy timber, thick vines, and steep or wet ground pushes toward the high end. Very small jobs (under an acre) are usually priced by the hour or as a minimum call-out.
Why is forestry mulching priced per acre instead of per hour?
Per-acre pricing gives the landowner a firm number before we start. Hourly pricing is fine for tiny jobs, but on any real acreage it puts all the risk on you — if the machine slows down, your bill goes up. We walk the property, size up the density, and quote the acre so you know exactly what you're paying.
Is forestry mulching cheaper than traditional land clearing?
Yes, on most jobs. Traditional clearing with a dozer means burning or hauling debris, dealing with stump holes, and often re-grading. Mulching leaves the material on site as ground cover, which saves the haul-off cost and protects the soil. On thick timber where stumps have to come out anyway, a hybrid approach is usually best.
Do you charge extra for stumps or larger trees?
